In literacy, we have regrouped and are working on various strategies to make sure that we are always thinking about the meaning of our literature. Kindergartners are citing evidence, inferring, discussing key details and retelling the story. We continue working on knowing our high frequency words in a snap and applying them to our reading and writing. We add details to our conversations as well as our writing.
We have also begun our new Science unit on weather. Kindergartners are learning about temperature, seasons, and different types of weather. We are using our senses to describe the weather and comparing temperatures. We are recording our findings just like scientists do. We are extending our findings by using our creativity to create poems and using watercolor paintings to depict the seasons as well.
In addition, kindergarteners learned about social justice and how lucky we are to have our friends of all races learning, playing, and loving together everyday. We celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. and shared stories of his courage, integrity, and peaceful efforts towards Civil Rights. Students joined together and reenacted a special moment that occurred here in our Park Hill community as we sang "We Shall Overcome" on the footsteps of Montview Blvd Church just as people did when MLK spoke there over fifty years ago. How fortunate we are to live in a community with so much history and to have a classroom that loves and respects our differences!
